Hey all-

I figured since this is Memorial Day weekend and I've handed out enough Buddy Poppies to last until November, I'd poll the ASB community and see what everybody thinks about making it a requirement that new members post an introduction. The logic behind this is twofold. One, it would allow the community to get to know them better in terms of their interests, and two, it would discourage rank posting as it would give them a place to test the waters here. The other reason, which is my own, is to make it easier to cull those spam accounts that I spend an hour a day on average deleting. So, please weigh in and let me know.

It sounds a bit "imposed" if you will, but if they didn't post wouldn't you have to delete them anyways?

It makes more sense to have them start a new thread to see how they respond and interact with the responses to their threads. There will inevitably be that majority that doesn't read the rules though.

Only thing I worry about is enforcement, but if you can make it happen, I think its a great idea.

I voted for posting in an intro thread, because when I click "view new content" I dont want it to be 99% new member threads

It's not retroactive so those who have already joined don't have to worry about it. However, to address your issue of it being "imposed," yes, it is "imposed," just like most rules on most bulletin boards. I could have kicked this around with the staff only, but decided to get as many perspectives as possible before talking with them.

Weeeeeell....

I think you'll end up spending more time enforcing the rule on newbies than deleteing spam accounts.

I'd Try it out and see if it help with the spam account problems.

It has worked on another forum I'm part of. It isn't like they are asking you to post your real name, address, phone number..etc.

I think it's a fine idea, but it's just the thing about enforcement. If you can make it work, I'm all for it!
